Paul Rodenko

[Netherlands]

1920-1976

Born in The Hague of a Russian father and a British-Dutch mother, Paul Rodenko had not read a poem in Dutch until 1947. This fact enabled him to have a truly original view of Dutch literature, and he was immediately attracted to the Fiftiers and their writing. Rodenko was primarily an essayist and served as the chief critical advocate and apologist for the Fiftiers and for Dutch experimentalism in general, particularly in his book Tussen de regels: Wandelen en spoorzoeken in de moderne poëzie (Between the Lines: Walking and Looking for the Trail in Modern Poetry) of 1956. In 1977 he was posthumously awarded the Dutch prize for critical writing, The Wijnaendts Francken Prize.
