Written more than twenty years apart, the two plays of this volume-both of which have been performed in the United States-reflect the author's theatrical preoccupations, his processes and approaches to writing, and his everpresent dialogue between History and personal history.

The first of these plays was presented at the Todd Theater on the University of Rochester campus in Rochester, New York, in 1988, co-produced by the "Parole Errante," Centre international de création and directed by the author.The second play was performed in September 2001 at the Los Angeles Theatre Center in Los Angeles, California, in a performance directed by Gino Zampieri and produced by Courage.

Born in Monaco in 1924 to Italian immigrants, Gatti graduated from the Monaco Lycée in 1941. In 1942, he departed Monaco and took up with the French resistance. The G.M.R. (the Garde Mobile Régionale, the national police under the German occupation) arrested Gatti and condemned him to death. He was repatriated and deported to the Linderman camp near Hamburg. The same year he escaped, managing to get to Great Britain, were he joined the parachute regiment of the Special Air Service. Over the years, he has written journalism, poetry, fiction, movies, and over 50 plays.
