German Literature, Poetry

The seventh volume of Green Integer's ongoing anthologies of world poetry of the 20th century is devoted to nine poets—all of whom held residencies at the Villa Aurora in Los Angeles—representing some of the best contemporary writing in German. One of the poets is an Austrian who spends much of his time in Germany; the others have lived most of their years in Germany—but all of them represent an internationalism and sophistication of sensibility that might be described of the many noted contemporary German-language poets.

As the editor of this volume points out, there is perhaps no particular set of reasons why these poets should be brought together—except for the fortuitous chance of their having shared a visit to the Villa and to Los Angeles. These poets—Oswald Egger, Dieter M. Gräf, Durs Grünbein, Michael Lentz, Said, Silke Scheuermann, Sabbine Scho, Lutz Seiler, and Zafer Senocak—share, however, generational concerns, and the opportunity to present such excellent poets in a more extended context than is usually allowed in US journal publications was one the editor simply could not resist.
