Greek Literature, Fiction

In this book of twenty-four stories, or "personal mythologies," Greek novelist and poet Andreas Embiricos combines history, myth, poetry, and psychology to create a sensual, original and fabulous universe. His characters, defying all convention, behave like the ancient gods in their often murderous and pleasure-seeking expeditions, fulfilling instincts latent in everyone.

Born in 1901, Andreas Embiricos worked in the offices of the London-based Byron Steamship Company (which belonged to his family) between 1921 and 1925. He later moved to Paris, where he joined the surrealist group of Andre Breton. Among his many books are Blast Furnace and Argo, or The Voyage of a Balloon. Amour Amour was published in Greece as Grapta (Writings) in 1960.
