Based on traditional Jewish numerology, Gematria is grounded on the principle that every letter of the Hebrew alphabet is connected to a specific number, thus endowing specific words and phrases, the sum of whose letters are equal, with special meaning and significance. Unlike his forebears, Jerome Rothenberg sees these synchronicities not as hermenuetic stand-ins for religious doctrines, but as an entry into the sort of aleatory or chance-derived correspondences central to modernist and contemporary poetry.
