“Marianne Hauser’s The Memoirs of the Late Mr. Ashley is a work of genius—witty, sad, in the American grain.”
— Gore Vidal

“…With her special gift for humor [Hauser] deftly weaves the strange, the unknown, the unfamiliar, the perverse, into a fabric of human fallibilities that draws dramatic farce close to us.”
— Anaïs Nin

“With a richness and color wholly alien to the novel in America, Marianne Hauser constructs a myth close to music in its power to move the reader from one dazzling passage to the next.”
— Guy Davenport
