American Literature, Fiction

A Sun & Moon title.

* * *

Composed during World War II, Mrs. Reynolds is an amazing political parable, whose subjects and characters share all the anxiety, fears, hopes, predictions, and miraculous events of wartime living.

The occurrences of Mrs. Reynolds' life revolve around the shadows of two men: Angel Harper (a thinly-veiled Adolf Hitler) and Joseph Lane (recognizable as Joseph Stalin). These figures transform the daily life of Mrs. Reynolds, who "likes roses to be roses," into a world of worry, a world in which she can no longer be certain "if she knew what it was that was true." For, as Stein writes, "...Suddenly in 1940 the United States of America instead of being a part of a big flat land illimitably flat, the land against which Christopher Columbus bumped himself in 1492, became part of the round world that goes around and around."

The world in motion, a world of change, is the subject of this revelatory fiction; and in maxims, riddles, foretellings, and predictions Stein reveals those changes, past and future, that all of us must suffer when "the sun moves so fast."
